Does My Personal Branding Shoot Need to Be in a Studio?
The location of your brand shoot helps tell your story. It will also play a role in the first impression you create and what type of audience you attract.
When you think about personal brand photography, a studio setting might be the first thing that jumps to mind. However, this is only one of the many options that you can choose from. Let’s take a closer look at which location options you could consider!
Home Office
Do you work from home? Do you feel that your home office visually represents your personal brand? If the answer is yes, then it’s perfect for your brand shoot. Give people a real behind-the-scenes view of how you spend your day. If you have a pet, you can absolutely include them for some relaxed shots, to give an even more personal feel. Some people like to include a few shots from their living room or kitchen (making that all-important cup of tea or coffee). It all depends on the impression you want to convey. Just make sure that your home office has lots of natural light and is relatively clutter free for the best photos.
Meeting Room or Coworking Space
If you don’t feel your home office is right for a shoot, you could hire a meeting room or coworking space. Choose one where the décor aligns with your brand image. You can even incorporate a few props to add a personal touch. If possible, choose a space that has other areas you can use, such as a lounge, kitchen or outdoor area that can be used to add variety to the shots.
Photography Studio
A photography studio is a particularly great option for headshots. If your photographer doesn’t own their own studio, you can create a studio vibe in an alternative space, and most photographers will be able to bring the ‘studio’ feel to you. This can include bringing backdrops and lighting equipment. Be mindful that this can take up some room, so discuss this with your photographer before the shoot to ensure there is enough space in your chosen venue. However, it’s worthwhile accommodating this extra kit as it produces a more professional finish to any headshot. If you want to, you could include your own props or furniture to make it more bespoke.
Apartment or Airbnb
There are so many beautiful apartments and guest houses that can be used for your personal branding shoot. If you know someone who has a great apartment or you’ve seen a nice location on Airbnb, this can be a good option for your shoot. This option is ideal for creating a clean but homely feel in your shoot. Again, think about bringing along your own props – including items in your brand colours – to reflect you and your business.
Cafés and Restaurants
If you would prefer an atmosphere with a particular ambience, why not arrange a shoot at a coffee shop, café or restaurant? It could be one you regularly frequent or one that you feel simply ticks the box of what you visualize for your brand shoot. Be sure to speak to the owner of the establishment first, however, as you might need to work around other patrons. You may even be able to reserve the spot with the best lighting.
Get Outside
If you or your business is outdoorsy, choosing an outdoor location could be ideal. Whether this is by the seaside, in a park or wood, pick somewhere that resonates with you or your ideal client. However, as outdoor shoots can be weather dependent make sure you have a backup plan in case of inclement weather!
So what do you think would be a great fit for your next brand shoot?
