Choosing the Perfect Outfit for Your Professional Headshot

Most people don’t need to think too hard about what they want to wear to work on a daily basis but if you’re having a shoot for a professional headshot, your outfit is going to require a little more thought.

Your headshot is the first thing that potential employers and clients will see so it needs to look good, and what you wear plays an important role in that.

First and foremost, you should have a comfortable outfit and it should suit your job role and brand. Let’s look at a few additional tips that will help you choose the right outfit for your headshot.

Add brand colours to your headshot image

5 Tips for choosing the ideal headshot outfit

Opt for colours that compliment your skintone

It’s also important to choose colours that suit your skin tone. For example, if you have a yellow undertone in your skin, it’s best to stay away from greens and yellows. The colours you choose will, of course, also depend on your brand colours. Adding a pop of those into your outfit can help with consistency. A word of warning, trying not to add too much contrast (for example highly patterned outfits or ones with big logos).

Pair different textures in your headshot

Consider pairing different textures

Pairing up different textures and fabrics works really well in photos. Again, the industry you work in will determine how much you’ll be able to change things up but textures and fabrics are something to consider during your outfit selection process.

Be aware of your neckline

Remember that your headshot is a close-up and that it may be cropped so be aware of the neckline that you choose. A V-neck is great for elongating your neck but if the V is too deep it might come across as unprofessional.

Stay away from trends

Fashion trends come and go but your headshot needs to last you a few years, which is why it’s best to stay away from any trending items that could look dated later on. This is not to say that you can’t look stylish, just be aware of trends that come and go.

Make sure your clothes fit

Wearing clothing that fits you well can make all the difference to your headshots. If your shirt is too small or short, not only will it be obvious in your photos but it will make you feel uncomfortable too, something that will show in your photos. Your clothes shouldn’t be too tight or too baggy so choose your outfit carefully. Ultimately choose something that you feel amazing and confident in.

If at any point you are unsure about what you should wear, speak to your photographer who will be more than willing to help you out with additional tips.
